It is very simple; each trip starts off with a Driving Score of 100 points. 20 points will be deducted for each driving infraction such as distracted driving (a phone call, texting, etc.) or speeding. Should the user score less than 100 points, they will not earn any points for the trip but will be notified of their driving score, the points lost due to unsafe driving behavior, and the locations along the route where the infractions took place. Only a Driving Score of 100, otherwise known as a Safe Trip, will earn points for the user.

Understanding Your Driving Score
If the Driving Score is less than 100 points, you will not earn any points for that trip but will be notified of your Driving Score, the points lost due to unsafe driving behavior, and the locations along the route where the infractions occurred. You will only earn points for trips with a Driving Score of 100, otherwise known as a Safe Trip. The number of miles traveled for each Safe Trip is multiplied by 5 to total the number of points earned.
Infraction Example: Driving Score of 80 and trip length of 10 miles = 0 points awarded and 50 points missed. Zero Infraction (Safe Trip) Example: Driving Score of 100 and trip length of 10 miles = 50 points awarded.
Rewards
The points earned per Safe Trip dictate the Star Level. At each new Star Level, drivers earn a $10 gift card. Only drivers between the ages of 16 and 25 are eligible for the rewards.
NOTE: reward eligibility must be manually verified by our staff and can take approximately one month between the time of earning the reward and receiving the e-gift card code(s).

After reaching 15,000 points, users receive a $10 gift card after every 5,000 points milestone.
You can also earn rewards based on the total number of safe trips you earn. For each of the benchmarks below, drivers ages 16 to 25 in either CO, NE, TX, or WA earn a $10 gift card.

Safe Trip Streak Badges
For every 3 consecutive Safe Trips, the user earns a Safe Streak Badge, up to a streak of 15 Safe Trips. Earning these badges makes the user eligible for random rewards given out in accordance with teen traffic-related events such as National Teen Driver Safety Week and other contests that Teens in the Driver Seat might hold.
YDS App & the Teens in the Driver Seat Program
If you attend an active 2023-2024 school, your school can earn All-Star credit for the Distracted Driving Guided Outreach Unit by having at least 10 students actively using the YDS App. An active user is defined as someone obtaining at least 1 safe trip within the All-Star period. (No activity form required)
