July means new laws for some states

July is right around the corner. For some it means celebrating the Fourth of July, for others it means summer is half way over, but for teens in Iowa it means no more using a cell phone while driving.

July is a big month for distracted driving. Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska and Wyoming will join Iowa by putting their own anti-texting-while-driving laws into effect next month.

Texas teens, who are under 18, are banned from using their cell phone or any electronic device when they are driving.

If I could change on thing about the way my friends drive it would be for them to stop texting while driving, talking on their phones while driving, or doing anything while driving that isn’t just driving.

Texting has become an addiction – everywhere you go you see kids, teens, and adults on their phones texting. We text at dinner, during class, at work, during a movie and even while driving! I myself can’t help to look down at my phone when I see that I received a text but in that split second it takes to read that message I am putting my life and other drivers lives in danger. How many more people must be injured or killed before we as “texters” realize that to spare a life we must put down the phone and drive?

North Carolina latest state to ban texting while driving

You’ve probably noticed lately that a lot of states have been banning text messaging while driving. Well, you can add another one to the list. North Carolina is the next state to ban texting while driving for all drivers.

The law went into effect December 1, 2009. In order to get a ticket, your car must be in motion while you are texting. For North Carolina the fatal crash rate for 16- to 19-year-olds has trended slightly upward.

In Colorado a new law will go into effect December 1 that will make texting while driving illegal for all drivers in the state. For all 16- and 17-year-olds, the law will also outlaw talking on the phone while driving.

The reason for the law is really a no-brainer – driver distractions are dangerous and can be deadly.

Do you ever text while you’re driving? According to a new survey, if you do, you’re not alone. The independent research organization, Toluna, conducted an online survey, and found that 60 percent of teens (ages 16-19) text while they’re driving.

Add in being a new driver and the combination is especially deadly. As of Jan. 1, 2009 California was the latest state to ban texting while driving.
