Phil sees his shadow – 6 more weeks of winter

Groundhog's Day is on February 2, each year.

Each year we wait to hear if Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, will see his shadow on February 2, and whether or not spring will come early. Yesterday, Phil saw his shadow which means six more weeks of winter and the possibility of unsafe driving conditions on the road.

Driving during the winter can be dangerous due to ice, snow or rain on the road and this is especially true for drivers with little experience. Teens in the Driver Seat wants to give you a few safety tips, since the end of winter will not be coming anytime soon.

Check your battery

When the temperature drops, so does battery power. Make sure that you have enough juice to start your car and keep it running by having your mechanic check your battery, charging system and belts.

Inspect your tires

Cold weather plus rain means icy roads. Make sure your tires can handle the ice and be careful when crossing bridges. Check your PSI (pounds per square inch), keep a tire gauge in your vehicle, and look closely at your tread (tread should be at least 1/16 of an inch on all tires).

Know how your car drives

Because every vehicle handles differently, get to know how your car does in icy, snowy or wet weather. Practice driving in different weather conditions, but do so in a parking lot, or road that does not have much traffic on it.

Slow down

In ice, snow or rain, slow down your driving. Experts say slowing down 5-10 miles per hour can decrease your chances of getting into a crash.
